The Epiphone SG G-400 is just one of a number of SGs in the Epiphone range, and, in fact, the G-400 is itself available in three different versions, the regular G-400, a Faded version, and a Custom model.
All the Epiphone SG G-400 models have a mahogany body and neck, rosewood fretboard with pearl trapezoidal inlays, Alnico Humbuckers, and a Tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece. The machine heads are Grover non-locking The regular version is available in Cherry and Ebony, the Faded in Worn Cherry and Worn Brown, and the Custom, which has three Humbuckers instead of two, in Antique Ivory. The Custom model also has block inlays in the fretboard rather than trapezoidal. The Custom is based on a 1961 Les Paul Custom and has the ‘Les Paul’ script on the headstock.
Its an impressive line-up and very affordable - a great way to own a classic electric guitar. The guys at Nevada Music in the UK say ‘The Epiphone SG 400 is a lovely guitar, despite being made in China the build quality is good, the pick-ups are warm and mellow on a clean sound yet gutsy and raunchy when the amp gets turned up to number 11.’
The guys at iMuso were even more enthusiastic in their review of the Custom, saying ‘This is one sexy, triple-decker ice cream of a guitar with the ’60’s styling and the iconic association with Jimmy the Page adding all the sprinkles you’ll ever need. The extra mid-range richness is a real bonus. Run your lead breaks through a treble boost stomp-box and you’ve got yourself a classic rock and metal workhorse that will cover all the bases.’
