Steve has posted an excellent and comprehensive history of the guitar in two parts over at Guitar 24/7. If you’re at all interested in the beginnings of the guitar and in particular how the first electric guitar was developed, it’s well worth checking out.
Steve does a great job of detailing the work done by George Beauchamp and The Rickenbacker Company in producing what was the first electric guitar, which became popular as a lap steel Hawaiian guitar. Yep, the first electric guitar was used to play Hawaiian music. That’s partly because Hawaiian music was hugely popular around the world in the early twentieth century and partly because the shape and sound of the instrument itself was suited to the music.
